Martina, a 16 year old on probation for truancy, entered the Community Based Mainstay Program unable to read. She had been assessed in elementary school as severely dyslexic and was placed in special education classes. Initially, Martina asked, “If the school knew what my problem was, why wouldn’t they help me?”

Martina received intensive in home support from a Mainstay Instructor. She also met regularly with a Mainstay Program Counselor. She worked diligently and improved her reading skills by three (3) grade levels. Martina responded by saying, “Now I can read my mail and letters from my friends myself.”

Her academic success helped skyrocket her confidence. Upon discharge from the Mainstay Program, Martina was employed part-time and was again attending school regularly. She was very proud of the fact that she had completed several job applications by herself.
